True, athletes participate in the GLSKS Race for the love of the race. But let’s be honest, the Paisley Vest is pretty nice feather in the cap. A Super Bowl ring? The Masters green jacket? The Heisman Trophy? The Cy Young Award? A World Series? A Final Four? There are dozens upon dozens of championships and awards to win, but which would you most want to claim? When it comes to degree of difficulty, there can be little argument that the GLSKS Race is the toughest accomplishment to reach in sports. Considered the pinnacle achievement in sea kayak racing, the grueling race combined with complicated strategy, is the reason there has never been a favorite predicted to win the race. Considered one of the most coveted awards in all of sports, the Paisley Vest has seen relatively few winners in the GLSKS race history and none as proud as Confluence Team Paddler Ben Lawry.
After years of preparation and training, and numerous race losses and disqualifications, Ben Lawry’s team finally achieved kayak racing history and won the 2015 GLSKS Race. Since winning this past July, Ben has traveled across the country proudly wearing his hard won Race Champion Paisley Vest.
