This track is designed for paddlers of all levels who want to fine-tune their skills and make their paddling more efficient, safe, and fun! Our safe and protected harbor provides an excellent learning environment no matter what your current skill level is, plus we can head out into the big lake for those looking for more of a challenge. First-time paddlers are encouraged to begin with our Sable Lake Starter to get you primed and ready for a fun weekend! On the schedule all courses in the Fundamentals Track will be highlighted GREEN.
Boat control is the foundation of every kayak skill you will ever learn. Being able to instinctively put your boat in the right place, at the right time is what this course is all about.
•Bow Draw, Stern Draw, Midship Draw, Sculling for Position
•Boat placement to effect the movement- standing the right stroke for the job at hand
Bracing is about much more than recovering from a momentary loss of balance by slapping the water with your paddle. It’s about expanding your zone of comfort and discovering that you don’t always have to keep your head over the center of your cockpit. From slow, comfortable braces to graceful low brace turns, this course will teach you to find support from your paddle while keeping your joints in safe, effective positions.

Learning on the Move
This all-day fundamentals course focuses on the essential skills and knowledge that make sea kayaking the incredible sport that it is. You’ll learn from dynamic and engaging instructors while you actually use your boats to explore the shores of Lake Superior on a beautiful and productive day trip.

Kayaking for fun…and fun
Hey! Kayaking is serious business! Or not. Find out just how much fun it can be when you treat the sport less like something associated with grueling expeditions and more like an activity that is meant for pure enjoyment! You’ll climb, stand, fall, smile, splash, laugh, and– secretly – build the balance and comfort which will make you a much better paddler in the end.

If you have the basic strokes and skills, but want to fine tune them, this is the course for you. Your instructor will survey the class participants and organize the time on the water to address questions and refine skills that are of concern to you. It’s the cherry on top ofa world-class learning event!

Did you know that there are 2 kinds of North? Ever heard of a transit line? What about the difference between a map and a chart? If you don’t, this course is the one for you! The basics of navigation asit pertains to kayaking will be covered both on and off the water. Bring a compass and get lost…because after this class you’ll be able to find your way back home again

Rescues and Towing
Rescues are the last line of defense between happy paddling and sad hypothermia. This course is designed to teach you the various forms of self and assisted rescues, including the basics of towing. You’ll get wet as you see these fantastic safety techniques from both sides of the water.
•How to rescue yourself (Self Rescue)
•How to rescue a friend (Tandem Rescue)
•How to rescue a Stranger (Also Tandem but with a few more things to consider)
•How to rescue yourself AND others (All In Rescue)
•How to tow another kayaker and/or boat to safety
Sable Lake Starter
Learn the basics in the comfort of warm, inland water. Launching, landing, forward paddling, turning, stopping, moving sideways, wet exits, and fun are on the agenda for this class that’s aimed at the beginning paddler. Once you’ve completed this course, you’ll be ready to tackle some of the other fundamental classes aimed at beginning and intermediate paddlers.
•Getting in and outof your boat, both in the water andon the beach
•Paddling forward, backward, and side to side
•Bracing and recovering from falling over
•Rescuing people who fall over
•PLUS your instructor will answer any questions you have about this sport of kayaking
SUP for Kayakers
Sitting down is fun. Standing up is fun too! And, at the end of the day, paddling is just paddling, no matter what craft you’rein. Learning to paddle a SUP isn’t a simple novelty –in fact, it may be one of the best ways to expand your understanding of paddling dynamics in your own kayak!

Surfing isn’t limited to a tropical experience on huge, curling waves with a banana daiquiri waiting on the beach. It’s also a very viable and rewarding skill in the colder Great Lakes. Learn the basics of wave riding and find out why everyone who surfs is smiling all the time!

In this on-the-water course you will learn a little about the rich history of traditional boats and paddles, as well as their hydrodynamics and associated paddling techniques. Ifyou’ve never tried a traditional paddle, this course is a valuable opportunity to expand your perspective and understanding of paddling technique.
Things look a lot different in the dark. If you have any doubts, join this Night Navigation course and find out what it takes to arrive on time and on target after the sun has gone down. You’ll learn about navigation lighting, deduced reckoning, basic celestial orientation, and lost procedures, all while exploring the harbor and open water around Grand Marais.
