Have you spend a lot of time and energy learning the sea kayak fundamentals but are getting bored with your usual, local scenery? Do you have a serious case of sea kayak wanderlust, but don’t know how to wander? Then the Expedition track is for you! Our top-notch instructors will teach you everything you need know about tripping and expeditions, from planning and boat packing to loaded boat rescues, back country cooking, and even overnight camping and bivy techniques. As a bonus, you’ll learn to expedition under the cliffs of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and on the shores of Grand Island National Recreation Area, two of the world’s most beautiful expedition venues. On the schedule all courses in the Expedition Track will be highlighted YELLOW.
Back Country Gourmet Cooking
The place to learn back country gourmet cooking isn’t in the Rec Center. It’s in the back country! Join our experienced coaches for a beautiful day trip and learn howto make meals that have to be tasted to be believed! Space is limited and a $15 fee is required (payable at the class) for meal supplies.

Composite Field Repairs
Duct tape, bungie cords, and plastic wrap are great tools to get a broken boat back to the beach, but what do you doif that beach is still a three day paddle from your take out? This course teaches you to fix the most common structural fiberglass damage through hands-on demonstrations and practice. You’ll also learn about the key components of an expedition-worthy composite repair kit. The demonstration boat might not look pretty at the end, but it will certainly be seaworthy!

Sea kayakers often confuse management and leadership. Management is shepherding a group safely along a path to a pre-determined goal. Leadership, on the other hand, is the ability to set the goals, evaluate the situation, recognize when the goals need to change, and motivate and inspire others to follow. Your leadership abilities will be forged in the midst of intense scenarios and discussions that accompany this course, both on land and water.

Open Water Boat Control
Do you know the secret to paddling in conditions and open water? It’s pretty simple: Be able to control your boat with the same precision and comfort as in flat water. You’ll be able to position your boat for a rescue, maneuver around a headland, and adjust your course in wind and waves with ease! This course will either be held in actual conditions or will use a variety of tricks and methods to develop your skill, even in calm seas.

Open Water Boat Repairs
What happens when you have a lost hatch, leaking skeg box, broken rudder, or hole in your boat on the water and can’t get to land quickly? Learn about and practice a variety of methods to repair a kayak on the water using a minimal On-The-Water repair kit in this engaging, hands-on class. It’s a perfect companion to the Composite Field Repair course, too!

You can handle your boat and know what you’re supposed to do when emergencies happen on the water. Now, put yourself to the test! In this course, you will encounter realistic scenarios that will draw upon your abilities to rescue, tow, think, and react with minimal guidance from the coaches. Make sure you come with a releasable tow system, a basic repair kit, and an open mind!
•ALL SCENARIOS WILL BE SOMETHING THAT YOUR INSTRUCTOR HAS COME IN CONTACT FIRST HAND. THE WILL INVOLVE BROKEN BOATS, PEOPLE, AND GEAR. HAVING SAID THAT, YOU’LL HAVE TO SIGN UP AND COME PREPARED!
