The Upper Pennisula- 6 Months Of Ice Climbing!

Who ever said the midwest has a short ice season is WRONG!  This Sunday with the temperatures locked in at 56 degrees, Michigan Ice Fest instructor Bryan DeAugstine and I traveled over to Munising to get in some late season climbing.  Sunday also happen to mark the 6 months that we have been climbing ice this year- defiantly something to celebrate!

The funny thing is that there is still plenty of ice to climb and will be for at least another week or two!  Now I’m not going to lie to anyone….most of the climbs are short seeps that are tucked back into the shady areas of the park- but none the less it’s still ice!

It’s been a great season with fantastic ice, and what better way to finish it off then to have a couple of bottles of bubbly chilling at the base of the climb.

Bryan enjoying the last of his champagne and contemplating an afternoon stand up paddling session.  Oh yes it’s nice to have options!

April Ice Is Nice!

Cold temperatures have extended the climbing season into April!  While the true waterfalls are no longer available to climb the seeps have actually been growing!  Sunday we headed out along the Lakeshore Trail to explore and play around on the soft April ice.

Most of the morning we swapped leads on perfect hero ice and found routes around every corner.  The temps started out in the upper 30’s and climbing in a fleece and no gloves was comfortable.

By mid afternoon the conditions started to deteriorate with rain changing to a heavy wet snow and with forgotten lunches and no water it seemed that we were in full alpine training mode!

Have you every played around with the Black Diamond First Shot?  With our extended day and worsening conditions it was nice to play around with some of our gear.  The first shot is a  unique, compact guide that provides the maximum depth and strength for threaded ice anchor.  It essentially takes all the guess work out of your angles for setting up your V thread and is super easy to use!

There is still time to get your ice fix this season!  If you are planning on heading up for one last trip don’t hesitate to give us a call to get the latest conditions!

Grand Island March 6th

If your going to go to Grand Island you might as well do it in style!  Sunday we got a hook up with an ATV and a snow machine to try and explore some of the climbs located along the west side of Grand Island.  The early morning start was a bit chili racing across Munising Bay but the clear sky promised to bring afternoon sunshine.  We had to approach the climbs via the island trails as the lake ice had too many pressure ridges to travel over with our machines.  This made route selection a little tricky but the great thing about the west side is that you can rap down just about anywhere and then choose the route of your liking!

After getting down to the lake ice we discovered an unlucky deer who either got a little too close to the edge or was chased over by the coyotes.  As the sun started to peak over the ridge we chose a beautiful line and started to rack up. With the words “No I don’t need all those screws” I headed up the climb.

Half way up the climb I started to regret leaving the other screws at the bottom…….and then when Linda yelled out that we only had 20 feet of rope left I really started to regret it!  The west side climbs are all of  200 feet long and with no screws left and the descent anchors are even further back, so it looks like I’ll be calling my friends at Sterling  for a new 70 meter rope!

March is my favorite time for ice climbing with warm temperatures and super soft ice!  If you have an inkling to get in some late season climbing make sure you head on up.  As you can see you’ll have Grand Island to yourself!
