Super Moon Saturday Night

May 4th, 2012 Comments off

Many of you are likely contemplating weekend plans since Saturday is graduation, but there may be another event to pencil into your calendar: viewing the “super moon.” At 11:35 p.m. ET Saturday, the official full moon will occur at the same time its orbit brings the familiar white globe closest to Earth.

The moon will appear very large and bright in the sky, about 16% brighter than usual. The best location to view the moon at its largest is when it is along the horizon after rising and just before setting. Viewing the moon behind trees or other objects will create an optical illusion so it appears even larger, making it a perfect time to try and grab some beautiful pictures.

So why is this full moon “super”? As the moon orbits the Earth, there are specific times when it is closest to and farthest away from our planet. Apogee occurs when the moon is farthest away from Earth, and perigee occurs when it is closest. On Saturday, the moon will be at its perigee and thus very close to Earth about 221,000 miles away.

This full moon will be big, bright, beautiful and certainly worth a look. The timing to see it will be perfect when many of you are out celebrating  Saturday night so be sure to remember to look up!

New Gear: Teva Fuse Ion

April 10th, 2012 Comments off

From Teva:

We spend an awful lot of time around people that live for adventure. When we asked them for the biggest problem with high-performance shoes, we kept hearing the same one: “I can’t wear them to the bar.” So, what’d we do? We designed a shoe that they would gladly wear to the bar, then we then figured out a way to make it the highest performing water shoe we have ever built. No big deal.

Just unpacked these beauties and gotta say…..I gotta have a pair!  Remember the old Tech Amphibians?  These are a similar shoe….but better.  Better looking and better functioning!  These would be great shoes trekking in the cloud forest of Costa Rica or on a rafting trip down the Colorado river.  Available in both men’s and ladies, be sure to stop in and try a pair on!

Down Wind Sports Is Now Carrying Hydro Flasks!

March 2nd, 2012 Comments off

Another  recommendation from one of our customers has led us to bring an amazing product to the store: Hydro Flask. Not familiar with Hydro Flask?

Hydro Flask began with a challenge: to create a reusable water bottle that truly performs in any environment. It had to keep hot liquids hot and cold liquids cold. Period. The result is our beloved Hydro Flask, the original double wall vacuum insulated stainless steel water bottles.

Made from food grade 18/8 Stainless Steel, Hydro Flask stainless steel water bottles are safe and 100% BPA-free. 18/8 stainless steel is remarkably light, yet extremely durable…

Keep your cold liquids cold for 24 hours, and your hot liquids hot for 12 hours. Get your Hydro Flask Water Bottles now and see why it’s the best bottle you’ll ever own. The Hydro Flask is available in 12-24 oz bottles in both narrow or standard mouth sizes.

You might be asking yourself right now, “What’s so special about a Hydro Flask® and why should I drop my hard-earned cash on yet another reusable water bottle?”

So let’s start with a simple science lesson.  Everything that has matter conducts heat, including water, air, plastic, aluminum, and stainless steel.

A vacuum is created when all of the air is removed from a sealed object. In other words, a vacuum is a space that is empty of matter, and each Hydro Flask® contains a vacuum seal between two walls of food-grade 18/8 stainless steel.

(If you’ve already figured out that a vacuum is a terrible heat conductor because it’s composed of almost nothing, you’re way ahead of “the other guys.”)

Our patent-pending double-wall vacuum insulation means that the temperature outside a Hydro Flask® has a very hard time affecting the temperature of whatever you might put in it. The best part is that this is a two-way street; whether you’ve got hot or chilled liquids inside of your Hydro Flask®, the internal temperature won’t affect the temperature of the container in your hand. That means no blistered fingers with your daily cup of Joe, and no troublesome sweat rings—from your bottle of ice water. Hydro Flasks® are pretty amazing, but we can’t make guarantees about individual personal hygiene practices!

At Hydro Flask®, our designers didn’t come up with “yet another reusable water bottle.”

They’ve created a technologically superior piece of hydration gear, one that puts a double-wall vacuum insulated barrier between itself and the competition.

Ou La La- Lakeshore Wet Woody Boards Are Here!

February 27th, 2012 Comments off

Designed as one of Lakeshore Boardworks sport models, this board is fast, agile, and very responsive….yet still very stable.  A sport inspired graphics scheme combined with the same beautiful wood finish as its larger counterpart gives this board the looks that match its performance.  The Wet Woody Sport is a perfect fit for the typical sports enthusiast and a great size for training, fitness, and all around recreation.

The Sport models are sporty versions and are designed more for performance and manageability. These models are at the core of the Lakeshore brand and represent a fun adventurous lifestyle. Experience the comfort, ease, and convenience of these popular Sport boards.

FLAT WATER  DESIGN

LPC SUPs have sharp vertically shaped front displacement hulls similar to canoes.  And high tech wave piercing bows modeled after sail boat racing designs.  These hull shapes enable the boards to slice through the water rather than plane on top of the water, giving the boards increased performance, speed, and tracking ability.  Displacement hulls and wave piercing bows are the best designs for flat-water and make our boards the “correct” product for paddling lakes, rivers, ocean harbors, and beyond the surf zone.

LPC SUPs have a much lower rocker profile to increase the length of the water line to maximize speed and glide.  They also have squared rails which create more volume around the edges of the board, providing better balance and more buoyancy in fresh water.  A flattened top deck also provides a more comfortable standing area.

LPC SUPs have numerous tie-downs & straps to hold all your flat-water gear, convenient built-in carrying handles for ease of handling & transporting, and waterproof two-way air vents to allow continuous core pressure stabilization during elevation changes and high temperatures (a very important feature for mountainous areas).

 FOCUS ON RECREATION

At LPC, the core of our brand features boards that are 30 inches and wider, lending to more stability and ease in use.  We call this a “true” flat-water recreational board and LPC is the only flat-water company focusing on this broader recreational market.  And because LPC understands that the average rider wants a board that is easy to manage and transport, we have developed ultra lightweight board options that are a first in the industry for recreational designs.

Stop in and check out our full line of Stand Up Boards and let’s get ready for summer!  You can also see our line up at the Boat and Sport Recreation Show at the Superior Dome March23-25th 2012.  At the show we guarantee it will be our lowest prices of the year!

Also don’t forget we have a wide range of demo boards to try out during our Tuesday night demos.  Please call the store for details.

Greg Maino Double Take- Keweenaw Makes The Fall Edition Of Stand Up Journal

November 7th, 2011 Comments off

Boy we sure miss having Greg in our Houghton store….and we really miss seeing some of his classic Keweenaw photography.  For those of you who also appreciate his shots- here is one of Greg’s that is being featured in the latest Fall 2011 Stand Up Journal.  Taken out at Big Traverse Bay last April, Greg catches local surfer John Mancini riding the waves during a typical Keweenaw spring snow storm.  Congratulations Greg, and way to get after it John!  If you are interested in an issue we have them available at both the Marquette and Houghton locations.
