Down Wind Sports, The American Alpine Club, and The South Superior Climbing Club is proud to present:
Fred Beckey. This will be an unforgettable evening with Fred as he will entertain us with tales and images of his storied climbing career.
Fred is an American mountaineer and author, who has made hundreds of first ascents, more than any other North American climber. Beckey’s rock start status with climbers stems from his age defying, never ending climbing career. At 88 years young there are no signs of Fred slowing down as he is still cranking routes all over the country. A fantastic read on Fred is a The New York Times Article, written when Fred was only 85 years old.
This is a unique opportunity to meet a true legend of the sport of climbing. Join us for this unforgettable evening on the campus of Northern Michigan University Thursday April 14th 7pm at JXJ 103
Another incredibly busy day in Salt Lake where the outdoor companies are rolling out new products for winter 2012. I found this Eton Soulra, a solar powered sound system for iPods and the iPhone. The sound was really good and I can see our staff rocking this out at the sea kayak symposiums this summer!
Cascade Designs has also introduced the NeoAir Reflect to their popular light weight sleeping pads. The Reflect offers four season warmth by adding reflective barriers to this ultr light pad which slows convective and radiant heat loss. And for those who have shied away from an air mattress because of having to blow up the mattress, the folks at Cascade have designed a surprisingly simple air trap pump to blow it up while not adding any weight to the pad!
One thing for sure the buzz at the show this year is that skis are getting even fatter (like you thought that they could get any fatter) and the skis are getting lighter. Above are the new graphics on the K2 Pon2oon, very fat at 157-132-122
Also checked out the DPS Skis. The Wailer 112RP bridges the gap with a shape that combines the loose and early planing feel of a fully rockered ski with aggressive sidecut and slight camber underfoot. It’s a one-ski quiver for planing untracked in the morning, laying trenches down to the lift on the groomed, and slaying crud in the afternoon. A 16m radius underfoot and great torsional stiffness allow for maximum versatility, while the rockered and tapered tips and tail allow the Wailer 112RP to get loose and be driven from the ball of the foot in deeper snow. If you know Red Carpenter, he is rockin’ a pair of these this season. 141-112-128
The show also provides an opportunity to mix it up with some of the legends of our sports. Here are 3 of the greatest climbers of all time. Fred Beckey,an American mountaineer and author, who has made hundreds of first ascents, more than any other North American climber. Jeff Lowe, the father of modern ice climbing, he is known for his visionary climbs and first ascents established around the world. And to top it off, Reinhold Messner, whose astonishing feats on peaks throughout the world have earned him the status of the greatest mountaineer in history.
