Telemark Skiing
With the Upper Peninsula situated on the south shore of Lake Superior it isn’t unheard of to have close to 300 inches of lake effect snow over the course of a winter. So, if you’re looking to get out into the backcountry, we have one of the biggest, least populated backyards with some of the best snow in the Midwest!
Whether you’re running laps at Marquette Mountain, ripping the trees at Mt. Bohemia or just off in the woods somewhere, you would be hard pressed to find better snow or a better time anywhere. Marquette Area
Marquette Mountain
Tried and true, Marquette Mountain is a great place to ski. With 600 ft. of vertical, three chairlifts, a rope tow, snow making, and night skiing you are sure to have a great time. Marquette Mountain offers telemark rentals and is a great place to give telemark skiing a try and maybe even take a lesson.
Marquette Backcountry
Much like everything in the U.P. there are hidden gems out there, and backcountry skiing is no exception! In and around the Marquette area are hidden pockets of gladed runs that locals have painstakingly trimmed. Harlow Bowl, Mount Marquette, The Hair Pin and Triple Nipple are all favorite local hangouts. Stop by the store for additional info.
Houghton Area
Mont Ripley
Mont Ripley is a fun little ski area. Located in the third snowiest city in America, what it lacks in terms of size it makes up for in volume of snow. There is a huge variety of terrain at this place from easy going groomers, to steep bumps and trees you won’t be disappointed. The rental shop at Ripley has been slowly growing their telemark rental fleet and offer a variety of boots, skis, and bindings for you to try out. They also offer lessons and with the largest bunny slope in the area it’s a great place to learn.
Mount Bohemia
Mount Bohemia provides one of the best lift-served backcountry experiences this side of the rockies. With 900ft of vertical and a whole lot of snow Bohemia is place where you can really test your mettle. There is no grooming at Mount Bohemia so conditions are dictated by Mother Nature. Fortunately, Mother Nature is typically very kind in this neck of the woods. Stop by or call the Houghton shop for the most accurate conditions report.
