What to Know

Before you book an ice climbing adventure there are some things you should know. We’ll do our best to answer the usual questions here but if there is something we didn’t think of please just send us a message.  We’re all about your experience

Who takes these trips?

Anyone and Everyone. We’ve guided kids as young 6 and people into their 80’s.  You can do this. You don’t have to be super fit and athletic to enjoy ice climbing. If you’ve been climbing for years and are looking for something a little more extreme, we can do that too. Whatever you want to get out of your experience, we can make that happen.

Ice climbing is great adventure for families and will make memories that will last a lifetime.

What does a trip entail?

Ice Climbing.  As much of it as you want.  You and your guide will work out a time and place to meet and then you’ll drive to the crag.  After some quick set up, instruction and a safety briefing you’ll spend the rest of the day climbing.  You can stay out as long as you want to.

We can provide all of the gear, or if you have your own you are welcome to use it.  We have a list of what’s provided and what you’ll need to bring that you can find HERE.

Where are we going?

Pictured Rocks and the Munising area offer the most ice and easiest access so that’s our default location and the one we encourage most people to visit.  But it’s not the only ice in the U.P. and if you’d like to explore a little please just let us know.

Lodging

Looking for a beautiful room in Munising? The Roam Inn is an 18 room boutique hotel situation 150 yards from the shores of Lake Superior’s Munising Bay.  Truly centrally located between “Browns Addition” to the west, and downtown Munising – everything the community offers is a walk away.

An ambitious renovation of an 1896 lumber baron home, with prior health care facility additions, Roam Inn is the result of a strong desire to preserve history.  They provide upscale hospitality rooms and service, and expertise of the local area attractions. The hotel also is the home of Tracey’s. Tracey’s is a relaxed, fine dining establishment that focuses on local farm-to-table ingredients.
When booking your room use the Guide Service discount code DWS15 to save 15% on your room reservation!
When is the best time to book a trip?

Winter is really long up here. The ice usually comes in during early December and lasts sometimes into April.  Early February through mid March typically offer the best ice conditions and late March brings more sunshine and warmer days.  For details on the conditions check out the Ice Conditions reports.

Cannabis and Alcohol Policy

Alcohol/Cannabis are not permitted at any of the climbing areas and use is not permitted prior to or during any guided activity by participants or guides.
